Living a independent life in Old Age
Choosing Independence or Dependence
Living alone in old age is a personal decision shaped by one’s health, mindset, and life circumstances. There’s no universal rule—while living alone offers independence and mental alertness, living with someone can provide security and support. However, constant reliance may lead to passivity or a loss of vitality. For me, staying alone keeps me active, disciplined, and engaged. It’s not about isolation—it’s about self-reliance with purpose.
There are only two main reasons why someone might choose to live with another person in old age. One is security—feeling safe physically and financially. The other is support—having someone nearby to help in times of need. That’s why I chose to live in a well-guarded society. It gives me peace of mind and safety. I also stay close to my son’s home. Knowing he is nearby gives me emotional comfort. I may live alone, but I’m not alone in spirit. This setup lets me enjoy independence while still having support when I need it.
It has been a little over a year now since I started living with my better half. I feel content. I have both companionship and independence. We share our space with respect, and I still take care of myself, my routine, and my decisions.
When I look back, I feel proud of the choice I made. It was the right direction for me. I don’t regret it—on the contrary, I feel happy and peaceful.
I’m truly grateful that my children supported me. In the beginning, my son wanted me to stay with him so he could look after me. I appreciate his care deeply. But my daughter-in-law encouraged me to continue living on my own and enjoy life with freedom and dignity. Her words gave me the confidence to take this step.
Their support—both emotional and practical—makes me feel loved and understood. My decision was never against them. It was for me, and they stood by me. That means everything.
